Schedule Time, it’s more fun in the Philippines!

Prom-Gowns-150x150

I’m using the slogan of the Philippines right now, “it’s more fun in the Philippines.” Why? It just dawned on me of whats going on with us a couple of weeks ago. Almost a month ago our daughter Jean told Bob and I that she found a gown that she likes for their Junior prom. Bob and I saw how she really liked the gown, you can just see it in her eyes. So the next day I told her that when she gets home from school we will go to the gown shop and we will rent that gown for her. So my niece Bebe and I went to the gown shop since Jean was still in school having volleyball practice. Anyway, when I saw the gown, I can’t … [Read more...]

A mother’s disappointment

Filipino-Baby-150x150

Over a year ago I posted about our helper here that has a teenage daughter from her previous marriage. The second husband of our helper tried to touch the daughter of our helper. He was beat up by the brothers of our helper and the husband was out of the house and he was staying somewhere with his relatives. When the daughter comes here sometimes to our house to help out her mom before. I kept on talking to the daughter and giving her advice to finish up her studies, because that’s the only thing she had right now to pursue her dreams. She’s in her junior year in high school. I’ve heard at that time that she’s already … [Read more...]

Dear Feyma “I will be a Ninong”

Bob-in-his-Barong-Tagalog-150x150

Hi Feyma, I will be attending a family wedding in Davao in the spring, and will be one of the Ninongs. As a westerner, I am researching what that means, but cannot really get a good handle on what is expected of it, especially coming from the west. Can you give me some short concise advice. I learn a lot from your site, but havent seen this term yet. Much appreciated, Bill I emailed Bill back and answered his query. I was thinking of making his inquiry into a post here on LiP. I was thinking their could be more like Bill’s questions there that doesn’t really know much about being  godparents here in the Philippines. So … [Read more...]

My Dual Citizenship status!

Oath-Taking-for-Philippine-Dual-Citizenship-150x150

As you probably know from reading on this site that I have been intending on applying my dual citizenship here in the Philippines. See, when we first moved here the dual citizenship was not yet approved by the Philippine government. So I came here with my American passport as did  the kids. After a few years of living here the dual citizenship was already approved. Bob’s been on me to apply for it, and that includes the kids too. I had talked to a friend before who knows about it. She was willing to help me, but with a hefty price for me to pay for her help. Before Bob was bugging me to apply he has been reading online on what to do … [Read more...]

Squash pancake everyone!

A-Pumpkin-Pancake-I-mean-Squash-150x150

Well, Thanksgiving is over and yet we are dreading on what to do with the leftover pumpkin puree. Luckily Bob was so resourceful in finding new recipe for me to cook. One of the recipes he got was about was a pumpkin pancake recipe. Since we don’t have pumpkin here in the Philippines, we just have squash here. Really we have pumpkin here in a can, imported from the States. And it costs a fortune to buy it. Since Bob doesn’t really like to eat food coming out from the can, I have to be inventive to make the recipe of what we have here in the Philippines. It worked out most of the time. I have to find what’s the best … [Read more...]

Sad ending of the year!

sendong-150x150

It really is sad to end the year right now. I am talking about what happened in Northern Mindanao just a few days ago. I was really shocked. The Cagayan de Oro & Iligan were caught off guard in the early dawn a few days ago when Typhoon Sendong hit Mindanao.  The storm passed right over Davao, but we got only a day of moderate rain, no real problems.  but, Cagayan and Iligan were devastated. Watching and reading on line, it’s just so hard looking at the pictures. It just break my heart seeing the body of people all lined up and washed away by the water. I just can’t imagine the fears of those people especially the children … [Read more...]

Our tradition on celebrating Christmas

Christmas

Growing up on the farm we used to celebrate Christmas with the whole family, I mean my parents, my siblings that’s not yet married at that time, my siblings with their family, my aunt that lives near our house, my cousins and some of our tenants. My dad would have one pig butchered during Christmas eve morning for the Noche Buena later. My parents and close family members will cook lots of different dishes and my mom and my aunt cooked snack foods. Few days before Christmas we draw names for our exchange gifts. The exchange gifts will occur at 12 midnight on Christmas eve. We all opened our gifts together. Honestly we just have a gift … [Read more...]

Bob’s friend!

Bob-JJ_ftr-150x150

A few days ago Bob bought a basketball for some kids that he knew a few months ago. Bob introduced me to these kids like a month or two ago. They are living  not too far from our house. Really near the small market in our area. One of the kids was kind of the head of the group, his name is JJ. He is more friendly and talkative to Bob. I think when they first saw Bob passing by at the market they probably called Bob by the famous names of the foreigners here “Joe.”  They were so friendly with Bob that they were friends right away. He told Bob that he goes to school in the afternoon. Honestly they are more friendly to Bob if I am … [Read more...]

Happy Thanksgiving to All!

Happy-Thanksgiving-150x150

Wow, its another year for us to celebrate Thanksgiving again. It’s really one of the most exciting days for us to celebrate. We are so thankful to God of all the blessings He had given us for the whole year. I’m so happy to have my family in good health. I know that we lost some love ones this year. But all in all God is good. I decided to decorate the house early for Christmas this year. I started decorating like around the middle of November. I decided to decorate the whole house instead of just the Christmas tree only. It was fun for the kids helping me out putting the decors. I am still trying to finish up putting up my … [Read more...]

A new friend

Girl-in-Jeepney-150x150

A few weeks ago Bob and I went somewhere in downtown Davao riding on a jeepney. When we hopped in the jeepney, we noticed a young and beautiful girl. Bob immediately talked to her and asked her name. The girl said that her name is Sakura. Just by looking at Sakura, we could tell that she’s not a full blooded Filipino, but half breed from other Asian country. She’s so light skin. Her grandmother (she’s sitting next to Sakura) confirmed to us that Sakura is a mestiza, her dad is a Japanese. She’s 8 years old. She’s a shy girl, but at least she was answering Bob when she was asking questions. While Bob and Sakura … [Read more...]
