“The Pandesal Kid” named Delmer!

My daughter and I did our early routine, walking in our neighborhood early in the morning. When we were almost home a kid showed up on the corner and yelled “Ate you want pandesal? It’s still hot”. I said to Jean we will just buy later at the bakery shop  since it’s too early. While following the path of that kid, I told Jean I think we’ll just buy so that the kid will make a little bit of money. So we then called the kid and told him we will buy some. I asked him how much per pandesal? He said it’s 2 pesos each Te (kids here called the older to them female “Ate” or “Te” – short for Ate).  So we bought 20 pieces. I gave him 50 pesos and told him to keep the change.

Then I was asking him what’s his name? Where does he live? How old is he? And what school is he attending? He answered my query. His name is Delmer. He lives in Maa, a bit far from us. So I asked him if  he walk from Maa to our subdivision? He said yes. Wow, he must starts waking so really early. He said he’s 13 years old. He’s attending public school in Maa. The sad part is he already quit school before and now again because the mom gets mad at him every time he comes home late. He said he comes home late due to he had to stay later in school because the teacher still teaches the slow reader kids. And he is one of them. So to satisfy his mom, he quit school. I guess the mom would rather have Delmer sell pandesal than go to school everyday. Delmer looks like a really good kid and very respectful. He probably thanked me a dozen times.

I was really telling Delmer before we walked separately away from him that he should try to go back to school next year and not stop. I told him if he won’t finish up at least high school he will be continue on getting lower job since he had no education. His mom works as a stay out helper for somebody near their house. The dad’s job was collecting plastic bottles, cardboard and metal stuff (They call it here “bote bakal”). So really they don’t make that much. I think he said he has 2 other siblings.

It really makes me sad that so many kids here have to stop school because they have to help making money for the family at a young age. It’s one of those unending cycles going on here in the Philippines.

I wish those families that struggle to live in the city will go back to the province and try to raise poultry and pigs for meat. And make a small garden for a start then maybe expand later to sell. Sad part for so many of these people they don’t want to live in the farm. Even though they struggle living in the city, still they stay. I know for one family, our laundry lady, they have a farm not far from here in Davao. But she said she doesn’t want to live there because it’s too quiet for her. Her husband and kids said the same thing.

Anyway, I’m really hoping for the best for Delmer. By the way, he is a 5th grade student. I’m really hoping he will continue his studies next year and will continue on until he graduates high school. I’m crossing my fingers for him. So many kids like Delmer here in the Philippines. Hoping for the best to all of them too.

Cheers!

A good women talk!

Myself, Bebe (Bob’s Bisaya teacher) and one more lady were talking a few weeks ago about getting together just to meet up for girl talk over lunch or coffee. We were set to meet up a week ago. But I had to bail out since I had a friend who came here from Manila. The day that me and the girls were getting together was the day that my friend from Manila had time to see me. My friend had business franchise and franchise seminars here in Davao City. I told my friend that I will definitely make time to see her while she’s here in Davao.  And the kids want to see her and her hubby too. It’s been awhile since the kids last saw them. The kids love them, so I had to bring the kids to see them. So Bebe and our friend understood that I had to cancel on them last week. Thank goodness for their understanding.

Finally yesterday we met up for the first time for our girls chat. It was really good seeing them and  just talking whatever is on our minds.  We decided to just met up at Swiss Deli, it’s just near our house, since the 3 of us live in this part of town. Big reason right now too to avoid the traffic going to the other side of town as you recall we have the bridge construction right now in Bankerohan. I hope the traffic will get better soon. :-) We also want to go and meet up at the other side of town. Maybe go for just window shopping. The 3 of us like different stuff. I like to shop and look for antiques, crafts and decorations. Bebe is into shopping for purses and fashion jewelries (affordable not fancy), our friend, she’s into fashion jewelries and gift items. I guess the 3 of us like to look at Ukay-Ukay too. We just get together to do some bonding moments.

Next bonding time might be in my house. Bebe was asking some easy recipes for her to make for dinner. She’s a busy mom, so she wants a quick and easy to prepare meals. I had a few ideas in mind but I had to show her how to make it. I’m going to be preparing some food too because this is the first time for that other friend to be at our house. Sorry guys I will not reveal the name of my other friend. I didn’t ask her if it’s okay for her to be named here. Maybe after our next get together I will ask her, if its okay for me to put her name here. I respect whatever she decides. Will see. We will invite Dr. Lourdes (our dentist) next time too. Hopefully she’s not so busy. She’s out of the country right now. Hopefully she’s back at that time.

Both Bebe and our friend are teachers. I had an idea how Bebe is in the classroom. I used to sit-in quite often when she was teaching Bob Bisaya before. She’s really good. I’m really applauding them because being a teacher you have to have patience. I think I’m a bit short of that trait sometimes. Talking to them really helped me a lot. I think I just have patience teaching somebody either my kids or my nieces in the kitchen. Even with our small kitchen still good for us to make something edible. LOL. Usually it turned out good.

Have a great day everyone!

The new update on my old post here!

A little over 2 years ago I posted a story (The unexpected company) of these 2 young girls named Arnie & Irish who were at our gate asking for our recyclable plastic bottles. My kids not only gave them the plastic bottles, they also fed those kids. We even brought those kids to the dentist. So lucky that we have a very generous dentist named Dr. Lourdes.

Anyway, a month or two ago my kids and my niece told me that the mom of Arnie & Irish had another baby. I just said “really”? To be honest what can I say. Arnie the oldest girl was kind of embarrassed seeing my kids and that they had another baby. But Irish was the talker and blabbed about they had a brand new baby. When my kids asked them where’s their mom? Irish said that their mom was working again to be a laundry lady not long after giving birth. She has to help the husband make some money. The husband’s job, he gathers plastic bottles and cardboard boxes for recycle and sells them.

Arnie & Irish

Arnie & Irish

A week or so ago. I was outside with my kids. We were cleaning our front yard cutting the grass in front. The oldest brother of Arnie came to us. He knows that we don’t know him. He really introduced himself that he was the older brother of Arnie & Irish. He told us that he is getting the fish in the canal in our area. So we asked him are you guys eating those fish? He said “NO”, he is selling those to like owners of a coi pond.

Really seeing him really makes us miss those 2 girls. Arnie really is embarrassed to swing by at our house now after their father got mad at their mom. He was so jealous that his wife comes home just a little after dark to finish up her laundry job here at the house. He was accusing his wife of having somebody. It was getting ridiculous that I told the mom of those kids to tell the husband that “She will not be working here if he had job to support them”. Honestly I don’t even need her here at the house. I already had a laundry lady, but I just want to give her a job instead of handing her the money.

I don’t think the oldest kid is in school now. They used to be in school before. But I think their kids now had to help their parents make money and take care of the younger siblings. Some people here let their kids even the 9 year old kid take care of the younger siblings at that age. The parents sometimes will ask the neighbor to keep an eye on their kids while they go to work. Lucky for our laundry lady, she had her parents and siblings near her house that her mom takes care of her kids while she’s working for us or her other jobs.

I’m still hoping for the best for Arnie & Irish family. Hopefully at the end they will just move to the province since the mom’s family had a small farm land there anyway. I think the wife wants to move but the husband likes to live in the city. In my opinion it will be good for them to be there and they will grow their own food. Crossing my finger.

Looking for good shoes!

I am not a shoe addict. I just want something that I can wear comfortably. I don’t wear high heels, the most heels that I’ve worn occasionally, that would be 2 inches, 3 inches at the most. So in short I’m looking for flat shoes. I am a sandals or flip flops kind of girl. Lately I’ve been really looking for more comfortable shoes, so I was shopping at Naturalizer shoe store. I used to wear the Naturalizer brand. They are lightweight with excellent support. I often have foot pain, but not with these shoes. I love these shoes. Over the years I have been trying other brands too. Some brands are comfortable, some are not.

Lately I have been having problems in my heel. So Bob told me to get a good and comfortable shoes. Immediately I was looking at the Naturalizer brand. SM Ecoland used to have Naturalizer store. I guess they just closed the store early this year. They have Naturalizer in Abreeza mall. So a week or so ago I went there. I heard on the radio that they had sale of up to 70% off. So I went to see if I can get a good deal there. I was so disappointed when I went there, yeah they had the 70% off only on the high heeled shoes. The heels were like 4-5 inches just guessing the height. Geez how can I walk on that? Plus it will make my foot more painful.

Shoes - where is the right one

Shoes – where is the right one

While shopping at Abreeza I was happy finding another store and another brand, its by Aerosoles. First time seeing the brand here. I went in and tried some of the sandals and  I felt  it so comfortable too, just like the Naturalizer. I didn’t buy right away, I told my daughter that I have to check the brand out on-line and read the reviews on that brand. It’s not a cheap shoes too. Similar price with the Naturalizer. When I get home and look at the internet, I saw good reviews. So I will check good sales with both brands when I’m ready to buy.

For running shoes, I felt had a pretty good one. It’s comfortable to wear. I got that half price thankfully. It was an expensive shoes. One of the problem for me finding shoes, I have a wide foot and high in-step. If any of you had the same problem with me, I will not be surprise if you had to go to a lot of shops before finding the right shoes. Good thing Davao and the rest of the country already has so many malls that carry good brands from other countries. Thank God for that. They even have here those super ridiculously expensive shoes that were endorsed by the NBA stars. I always called them “The eye popping highly price shoes”. Ain’t buying those for sure.

My kids have a big problem also shopping for shoes. My oldest Chris wears size 13, Aaron & Jared our youngest wears size 12 (American size). I’m more worried about Jared later though, because he is just 14 years old and he already wears a size 12. How much more when he will be like Aaron’s age? For his school shoes I am ordering to be made by a shoe company here in the city. A friend suggested to have it made here locally. But for the tennis shoes I had to search the whole malls here in the city to find the shoe that fits him. Jared’s problem also he has wide foot and high in-step. He got that from Bob and my side of the family. Thank God I don’t have shoe problems with our girls.

If malls don’t have it in stock, I can easily have my friend get it for me in Manila. For sure lots of places to get shoes in Manila. So for any of you that have some concerns about shoes for bigger foot, there’s hope now for everybody finding a good shoes here in the Philippines. Too many good brand from other countries that’s for sale here. Just have your wallet ready. ;-)

Have fun shopping!

Introducing our new baby “Blue”!

I think some of you here are aware already who our new baby is? If you happened to be the Facebook friend of Bob, you would know then. Bob posted on his wall a few days ago that we had a new baby here in the house. We named her Blue, because she has blue eyes. That obvious. LOL

Really it all started with our helper Joy, her daily routine sweeping the front yard and outside the gate of our front yard. So a few days ago while she was sweeping she could hear a meowing outside our gate. When she went and looked outside the gate she didn’t see anything but the voice of the kitty continued on. So she heads out and follow the sound, she could hear that the sound was under our pathway. well it’s really in the canal, on top of the rock inside the canal. So she ignored the kitty at first and continue on sweeping. A few minutes after sweeping she just could not bear letting the kitty meow, she got the dust pan inside and got the kitty and brought it inside near our turtle area. She then got our water hose and bathed the kitty. She washed it thoroughly with soap. She then showed it to me and the kids and told us she found  the kitty outside. I can’t decide yet of what to do with the kitty because Bob was not home at the time when I saw the kitty. He has a meeting every Monday. So I told Joy and the kids to just wait when Dad comes home, then we will decide what to do. Then when Bob came home, I was out for a meeting. So same thing, Bob can’t decide either on what to do since I’m not home yet. So while waiting for me the kids and Bob were playing with kitty then. When I arrived we all decided to keep the kitty (Blue). Makes the kids happy and us adults too here in the house. :-)  … Ha ha ha…

Baby Blue, just a tiny baby!

Baby Blue, just a tiny baby!

Before Bob arrived, my thoughts right away, who do I know here in Davao that I could give the kitty to. We already had 3 cats in the house. I’m just so worried that these 3 cats would devour this kitty alive. I already saw before one of our cat almost rip open the tummy of the kitty that we had. so I just don’t want to see that happening again here in my house. Not a scene I want the my kids to see.

Funny thing is, when we let Blue play with the dogs my gosh she hissed them. We were all laughing because she’s so tiny compared to the dogs and she’s so brave and tough of hissing them. Our dogs can easily tear her apart. Our dogs I guess knew that were there watching, they just left her alone and went to the back of the house.  Luckily I had lots of baby sitters here in the house that the kitty was pretty much safe while the other 3 cats were watching. We are slowly introducing them to the new kitty, same also with our other 2 dogs.

We brought her to the vet clinic and they gave her de-worming medicine and they gave her antibiotics since we just found her in the ditch. She also had new formula. She’s going to start the vaccination routine next time she visits the vet clinic again in 2 weeks time.

Anyway, its another baby here in our household. Jean is really wanting a puppy. Holy smoke our house might turn into a zoo pretty soon here. LOL

Have a great day everyone!
